Custom action figure and other projects

Comic Style Conan & Red Sonja

Crom!  Finally posting pics of 2 figures I've been working on for a while.

Glad to have finished my custom Red Sonja figure.  As I had said previously, I had picked up the Phicen Red Sonja figure for the few things I wanted from the set, mainly the head, body, boots, and sword.  You can check out the previous post where I get into everything that was wrong with the original boxed figure, and everything I rebuilt.

Since the last round of pictures, I've also rebuilt the battle-ax, added fur to the boots, and made a new cloak from scratch.  Way happier with the end result.
I've been wanting to do a custom Conan figure for so long.  There have been some great 1/6 accessory sets based on the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger film (which I wholeheartedly love) but I've always really loved the comics.  Savage Sword of Conan was my 1st real introduction to the character, and I devoured any of the magazine sized issues that I could get my hands on, long before I ever read any of Robert Howard's original stories.  For the last 10 years or so Dark Horse has been absolutely KILLING it since they got the rights to the character, and it's probably my favorite portrayal of Conan yet.

So, I've always thought that when I did do a Conan figure, it'd be much more based on the comic style.  Plus, that gave me a lot more room to do my take on the character, than try to match up to any movie accuracy.  As soon as Phicen released the M34 body, I knew it was time to get to work.

I had posted a few photos on instagram, but have since gone back and redid the hair, since it was just looking too big and voluminous.  I think the final result is exactly what I was going for.
And of course, I had to get a few photos together.  I plan to take a bunch more of them, as I get the chance.

X-Men

My god, has it really been this long since I've posted an update here?  I've been working like a fiend on projects these last few months, although I can't seem to get anything to the point where anything feels done.  I've been posting lots of work in progress stuff over on Instagram, but it I've been terrible about updating here.  But it's time I came home.

Way back when I 1st showed my custom/kitbashed Wolverine I talked about how I've always been a big Marvel Comics fan, but I've never really loved the super hero costume thing.  I've been thinking for so long that I'd really love to have figures of all my favorite Marvel characters, how I'd like to see them designed. And there's no better place to start than with the team that got me into comics, the X-men.  I wanted to approach it trying to design outfits that I could imagine they'd wear, adding little nods to some of the things that were iconic about their costume when I could.  While there's still some details I want to add for some of them, I thought it'd be fun to get some pictures.

I recently upgraded Wolverine to a new Phicen/TBLeague body.  The ZC toys one was always kinda wonky and loose in the knees, and the Phicen stuff is just so much more fun to pose and play with, not to mention just how good it looks.  At this point, besides the House of Seasons line, I just can't imagine going back to jointed bodies again.
I really love X-23, and since she's been introduced she's become one of my favorite newer Marvel characters.  I'm still trying to figure out the right look for her, but I'm feeling pretty good about everything here, and feel like it's in line style wise with a lot of the type of stuff she's been drawn to wear.
I was instantly fascinated when Gambit 1st showed up back in X-men in 1990 (holy crap, I can't believe that was so long ago!), rivaling Wolverine for my favorite comic character at the time.  I tried to keep all the iconic details, like the leather trench coat and the touches of purple in his shirt as a nod to his costume.  I'm particularly proud of how repainting his eyes came out, since it was my 1st try at something like that. I'm still working on some resin energy effects for his cards, but think overall I nailed the look I was going for.
And Psylocke.  I'm particularly happy with how the dress came together, since I wanted to design something that still referenced elements and the color of her costume, without being a costume.  I actually think I could say she's finished, although I'd like to get a bunch more pictures.  But here's at least a preview.

So many more characters I'd love to work on, and lots in the works.  Stay tuned!
